Ik heb het boek gekocht op aanraden van een bekende. Had bij het bestellen alleen niet gezien dat het een dik en groot boek was. Dat was wel even schrikken maar het lettertype is groot en leest erg makkelijk.

De uitgelezen kans om ook mijn Engels weer wat bij te spijkeren. Je verwacht vanwege het onderwerp nogal droge stof maar dat is het helemaal niet. Veel herkenbare passages en voorbeelden maken het makkelijk leesbaar en toch is het confronterend en zet je aan het denken.

De inside die het boek geeft in de wijze van trainen en de balans die je daarin moet zoeken is erg helder. In plaats van iets voorschrijven maakt Joe duidelijk wat de opties zijn en neemt hierin ook je niveau mee. Als je een beginner bent zoals ik schrikt het niet af en volgens mij leer je ook nog wat als je meer ervaring hebt.

Ik heb hem als goed beoordeeld omdat ik geen vergelijking kan maken, dit is het eerste boek over trainingsleer wat ik gelezen heb. Kortom een goed en helder naslag werk, die duidelijk de keuzes weergeeft en toch kan confronteren als of je 1 op 1 met je coach bezig bent.

Het enige wat je zelf moet doen is discipline opbrengen voor de uitvoer. Het is een flink boek om helemaal door te lezen waarbij er echt diep wordt ingegaan op trainingsleer en triathlon training specifiek.

Het is ook goed mogelijk om alleen hoofdstukken te lezen waar je in geinteresseerd bent. Mij helpt het om een jaarplanning te maken en om het nut van bepaalde trainingen te begrijpen. Iemand die in 1 boek zoveel mogelijk informatie over triatlontraining wil hebben, kan gewoon niet om deze bijbel heen. Zowel starters, recreanten als topsporters vinden hier ongetwijfeld wat ze zoeken! Ondertussen is er met 'Your Best Triathlon' een zeer praktijkgerichte opvolger.

Het boek geeft een duidelijke handleiding hoe je een trainingsplan moet opstellen en te handhaven. Zelf heb ik al veel kennis van mijn sportopleiding, maar toch biedt het boek nog vele extra aspecten. Zoals in het boek vele malen duidelijk vermeld wordt is het belangrijk het boek niet letterlijk over te nemen, maar het toe te passen op je eigen situatie of die van je atleet.

De gegeven templates zijn nuttig om een voerzicht te krijgen, maar persoonlijk vind ik het op een andere manier iets duidelijker. Dus doe er je eigen ding mee en neem niet zomaar alles over. Dan kan het boek een uiterst nuttige handleiding zijn om je trainingsplan op te stellen!

De pluspunten van dit boek vind ik: Praktisch, Heldere uitleg Maar wat ik jammer vind: Zou mooi zijn wanneer er een NL editie verscheen. Een mooi en goed naslagwerk voor iemand die al enige tijd triathlons doet, met allerlei extra tips en aandachtspunten om nog verder te verbeteren en meer uit de sport te halen.

Zelf raadt hij zijn boek voor startende: 'your first triathlon' aan, wat veel meer basis geeft voor die startende. Ook het boek 'Triathlon trainingsprogramma', van Paul Huddle en Roch Frey, vond ik een fijne aanvulling te meer omdat het 'NL maten' gebruikt in bv afstanden en snelheden. Deze drie boeken bij elkaar maken dat je voorlopig voorzien bent van voldoende informatie om te gaan voor een eerste en alle volgende triathlons!

Blijf altijd andere boeken, artikelen en blogs lezen, aangezien trainingsleer snel verandert, maar dit boek biedt absoluut de beste basis die er is.
